Off Topic: Edible Logos
Flickr is great for armchair polling. Great meaning dangerously facile (these are self-selecting users, not exactly in the general public). And as the man said, just as to a carpenter every problem looks like a nail, everything to me looks like a design question. The Obama logo had early been criticized by a few in the design community as perhaps too slick, but you’d have to say it’s successful on the ground.
And by on the ground I mean in the collective ovens and tummies of American cookie-eaters. But I’m also wondering if it’s a good logo because it reflects the overall organization of the Obama team; and if the lack of a singular compelling image relating to McCain is a reflection of the lack of their own compelling narrative. Which leads me to cookie versions of the logos:
The Obama cookies can be made by anyone. Even when the logo isn’t rendered exactly faithfully, we still get where you’re going with it. You can even retrofit some store bought sandwiches and it’s recognizable.
The logo itself is already almost a cookie.
The McCain cookies, though – we just seem to be at a loss, graphically. I’ve seen Cindy McCain’s recipe, or his head or an elephant. There’s none of the Optima and military star. Maybe it seems disrespectful to eat something that marshal in a time of war. Maybe it’s just too hard to copy the font. I don’t know.
But I do know this: old-man-face cookies are just kind of creepy.
